Dear Parents and Guardians of the Flushing Manor Community,

Hope everyone was able to enjoy the weekend! This week we saw an example of how the improper use of social media could cause fear and anxiety in the community and nation. It is essential that we continue to remind our young children to make safe and kind choices in all interactions including those that involve the use of technology.

Parents are the first line of defense in ensuring that children are not exposed to inappropriate content including posts that involve violence. Additionally, most social media platforms usually require a statement verifying that the participant is 13 years or older. Our students are not 13 yet, but many are using the platforms. It is clear from this week’s events that content can be dangerous and that our young children need to be protected from it.

Here are this week’s updates and reminders.

Health and Safety: It is important to monitor your child’s health before sending them to school. The health screener requires children to be in good health and asymptomatic when entering the school building. It also requires that no exposure took place. As a reminder, children should never be sent to school with a fever and must be fever free for 24 hours before returning to school.

Access Google Classroom: At this time all students and families must be able to easily log into their google classroom to access materials in the event of a class closure or partial closure. Practicing this simple action will ensure that learning will continue without interruption if remote learning becomes necessary. Though there is no plan to have a system wide closure, with cases rising, partial closures and class closures may occur as directed by the situation room. If you are having difficulty logging in please contact the school for support.

Parent Coordinator Update: An introductory letter with contact information for the new parent coordinator, Sandra Wong-Blanchet will be shared on our school website. Ms. Blanchet will be holding virtual meet and greet sessions for all grades in the coming weeks. She will hold sessions for grade K parents this Tuesday at 12 noon and a grade 5 Meet and greet will take place this Wednesday at 12 noon. A separate email will be sent with details to families of those grades.

Student Council Updates:
School-Wide Door Decoration Event: Take a look in your child’s google classroom for a posted picture of the decorated classroom door!

Spirit Day: Thursday, December 23, 2021 is pajama day-students and staff can wear warm comfortable pajamas to school.

Device Request Link: Families requiring technology devices at home should complete the survey below. Someone from the school will contact you for device pick-up once the order is processed.
