Dear Parents and Guardians of the Flushing Manor Community,

Hope everyone had an opportunity to enjoy the continued good weather this weekend! We look forward to another productive week at P.S.184Q

Safety Information: This week you will be receiving two backpacked letters regarding safety.  A safety drill letter and a discipline code letter from the chancellor.

Safety Drills: We have many systems in place to protect the children and staff in the event of an unforeseen emergency. It explains the drills that are implemented in preparation for this. We have already begun the implementation of these drills and the children have been educated about each. In addition, our school’s safety plan for this school year has been submitted and is being reviewed at the Borough level.

Discipline Code Information: In order to provide the safest and most nurturing environment for all students the NYCDOE has created a discipline code in order to ensure that the students are acting responsibly and safely when in school. Teachers have already begun to present the discipline code and set rules for their own classrooms. Discipline Code resources and information for families can be found on our school website at ps184q.com under resources.  The actual discipline code itself with translations provided can be found at this link:
https://www.schools.nyc.gov/school-life/know-your-rights/discipline-code
Talking to your children about the presence of rules and the discipline code in school is another layer of support to ensure their success. If you have any questions or concerns you can reach out to our Guidance Counselor, Ms. Acquista at the school or by email at maquista@schools.nyc.gov.

Traffic Safety Reminders:  Just as the children and adults have systems and rules to keep everyone safe inside the building, there are also rules in place in the community at large and these are called laws.  We thank those family members who continue to act safely and obey traffic laws as they drive around the school perimeter and those who choose to park and walk instead of drive. We continue to remind everyone that this is a critical step in ensuring the safety of our children. I have contacted the 109th precinct for assistance in enforcing the rules around the school including double parking, illegal parking and idling.

Lexia Log in Information: Beginning of the year assessments mentioned in last week’s email continue. This week children will come home with their Lexia log in information. They have completed the brief placement activity and can now begin using this research based program to improve reading performance and progress. Lexia is not available through the teach hub log in process. It requires its own separate log in. We encourage families to put this information in a safe place. We will be sending a parent letter home this week explaining the log in process and more about the program.

Google Classroom: This week our teachers held their virtual Meet the Teacher sessions. Information from these sessions is posted on your child’s google classroom along with other important information about your child’s class. Access to the google classroom is necessary in the event there is a need for remote instruction to occur. We encourage all families to gain access to google classroom and keep log in information to this important tool in a safe place.

PTA Updates: Information from the PTA is being shared through Parent Square and through email. Please be sure to read the updates. Our first PTA meeting if the school year will be tomorrow night at 7:00PM.

Finally, please read the Parent Handbook in effect for the 21-22 school year. It provides information about practices and policies. It is available on the resources section website ps184q.com

Sincerely,
Anna Dimilta
