Weekly Update #12

Dear Parents and Guardians,

We are looking forward to welcoming our blended in-person learners back this week. On Monday, December 7, 2020 the B group will be in school. Fully Remote students and Group A students will learn at home on this first day back. The in-person calendar will continue to be posted on the school website. There will be no changes in schedules for any students this week. All in-person learners must have parental consent for weekly Random COVID testing, which will begin in all elementary schools this week. The best way to complete the consent is through the NYC Schools Account. As per the Chancellor’s letter, if parents do not provide consent, their children will be transitioned to Fully Remote Learning. We will be calling any families who do not have consent on file to explain the process and request that they provide consent or pick up their child to learn remotely from home. We ask all of our community members to be understanding of our responsibility to fully implement this DOE policy. We will continue to support our students through the testing process.

5-day Learning Transition: The Mayor has announced that all schools will attempt to transition to 5-day a week programing for in person learners using its existing resources, when possible. We are in the process of looking at some options that may work for our children using existing spaces and staff, while continuing the strict social distancing guidelines that remain in place, and have contributed to a safe environment at P.S.184Q. Families will be notified if any changes to in-person schedules are possible. Please understand that this is not a guarantee at this point due to the already existing staffing shortage and budget loss. I will consult with the SLT and hold parent town hall meetings to discuss final decisions regarding any changing schedules in the coming days and weeks.

SEL Opportunities: We have now had all of our teachers trained in the Sanford Harmony SEL program and have already seen them begin implementation of this specific SEL program with our students. Our guidance counselor Ms. Aquista, continues to schedule remote opportunities for all 3rd 4th and 5th graders to gather and socialize 3 times a week. Visit the counselors corner for details about both of these initiatives.

Report Card distribution and updates: Report cards will be distributed later this month. Grading policy for the 20-21 school year is aligned to the NYC DOE policy that was set for this year and can be found under the resources section of the school website ps184q.com. We encourage all of our families to ensure that their young children attend on line and in-person learning opportunities as consistently as possible. Having a consistent presence during instructional lessons can make the difference in whether or not the material is mastered. Punctuality is also important! Each google classroom has the session times for live instruction posted on the classroom information page.

Parent Coordinator Update: We have finally been granted the exception to the hiring freeze that is in effect regarding the parent coordinator vacancy. At this time the position is posted on the NYC DOE website. We look forward to filling this position in the coming weeks. We know how important the support system offered by the presence of a parent coordinator is for our families.

Thank you in advance for your continued support during these unprecedented times. Wishing everyone continued health and well-being as we enter this last month of 2020!
