Dear Parents and Guardians,
On behalf of the staff at P.S. 184Q, I would like to wish all of our students and families a happy, healthy holiday break and a Happy New Year 2020! We are recommending that students are provided time to access the online First in Math and Lexia programs over the break. I will be offering an incentive to the class on each grade who has the most students completing their weekly minutes on Lexia. The top class on each grade will earn three (3) rocket rewards and receive a special treat when we return from the break. Time on Lexia improves reading performance!
INSTRUCTIONAL FOCUS UPDATES: We continue to redesign our curriculum to ensure that it is a shared an inclusive one that reflects the culture and experiences of the students that we serve. Our teachers have been selecting texts that reflect the cultures and circumstances of our own students, as well as, those across the city. We are accepting parent book recommendations that reflect the many diverse cultures here at P.S. 184Q. If you would like to send in a book or a book title that is special in your household and reflects your family’s culture, we would love to see if we could connect the recommended titles to our curriculum in some way. All books will be returned to you after we have had the chance to review them. Many families have already contributed!
ARTS UPDATES: Our grade 5 students shared their ballroom dancing talents earlier this month when the Dancing Classroom residency came to an end. Several students represented our school at the Rainbow Match competition and won the Silver honor. We continue our Citi Center dance program with Ms. Dawn, made possible this year by a combination of PTA and school funds. Our grade 3 and 4 classes will be performing their dances in February. Grade 1 and 2 classes will continue their dance instruction through the spring and grade K will begin their dance instruction in February. Our Music teacher continues to serve several classes on a weekly basis. Our afterschool CASA theater program will begin when we return form the break and will serve grade 3 and grade 4 students. This free program comes to us through a city council grant from Councilman Vallone. Mr. Adam will also serve an additional group of students with a theater enrichment after school program. Additionally, Mr. Garner will provide an after school enrichment program in visual arts for selected students.
CAMERA UPDATES: Our school’s camera installation is underway. Councilman Vallone was able to secure city council funds in the amount of $400,000 to support safety at P.S. 184Q. This project will provide our school with 32 cameras strategically placed inside and outside of our school building. Our security agent will have a viewing station set up to monitor the cameras. We expect the project to be completed in the spring.
CLOUD 9 MONTHLY THEMES: This year we are using a series of character development books that remind our young students of the importance of developing special qualities as they grow into young adults. So far, we have read about and discussed the following themes: Kindness, Cooperation, Acceptance, and Humbleness. Upcoming themes include Self-Control, Respect, Compassion, Honesty and Integrity. We encourage our students to develop these qualities so that they will be successful inside and outside of school on their journey of being learners for life, for life!
